‘Diamond planet’ discovered: can this solve the world’s financial problems?
Grant J. Kidney — Scientists have discovered a planet comprised mainly of diamond floating at about 40 light years away from the Earth. This most unusual of worlds, known as ’55 Cancri e’, is said to be eight times the mass of our own planet and boasts surface temperatures of 3,900 degrees Fahrenheit (or hotter).
The real question is, might we be able to travel to this planet, extract many trillions of dollars worth of diamond, and use this money to fix all the world’s financial ills? The answer is ‘yes’- however, don”t expect this bright idea to ever cross the minds of the power brokers.
The nearest star system lies at approximately four light years from the Earth. This means that if one were to shine a flash light in the direction of this star system, it would take four years for that beam of light to reach its destination. According to big science, we haven’t yet discovered a way to travel at the speed of light (or faster for that matter). However, a close examination of secret government projects- particularly those at places such as Area 51- may reveal that not only is light speed achievable, but also the ability to travel through ‘wormholes’ as well as to bend the very fabric of space-time as we know it.
The truth is that we can reach 55 Cancri e if such were truly the prerogative of our planet’s elite.
Suppose for a moment that we had responsible leadership of this planet. Even if no secret government tests were conducted wherein the speed of light or speeds in excess were achieved, a responsible team of officials would surely motivate bright young minds to come up with a way to make such a possibility- and they would also allocate a tremendous amount of money and resources to make this happen.
If we could only reach 55 Cancri e and be able to make it back in time for breakfast, we would have extracted enough diamond to pay off all public and personal debts the world over. Diamond is incredibly scarce mind you. Its value alone should be enough to motivate Earth’s leadership to develop some plan to reach this new and fascinating world so that we can finally move on past this debilitating era of economic morass.
I think in the long run however, the discovery of such worlds like 55 Cancri e only illustrates even further how ridiculous the concept of commodity based economics truly is. To think that the entire world economy rests solely on the notion that gold or some other form of ‘shiny rock’ equates to high importance is truly laughable.
The alternative to finding a path to the diamond planet is to just get rid of money outright. Of course the elite wouldn’t want for this to happen however as capital serves as the sole divisive mechanism in our culture.
