SOPA Website Blackout is Victory for Free Speech
As many major websites ‘go dark’ today in utter protest against the tyrannical SOPA and PIPA- bills which would transform the Internet in to a globalized, Chinese style, free speech crusher- I’m certain our ‘leaders’ have taken a hint- we the people demand a liberated web free from governmental intrusion!
Today, scores of protesters took to the streets in New York to do some offline protesting of both SOPA and PIPA. The battle has proven not to be just one fought in cyberspace- this is a major ground assault as well.
Free speech hangs in the balance. In recent times, it was the right to free speech online which helped the masses in many differing countries to organize resistance to government. The Arab Spring of 2011 led directly to Occupy Wall Street in America and in Europe all thanks to free, online social media.
Some companies which first pledged their support for SOPA and PIPA have since backed down all thanks to Internet activism. It was the efforts of one man alone who brought GoDaddy to its knees over their support of online censorship. After launching a major boycott against the Internet giant, the efforts of just a few citizens proved effective in swaying the opinions of those who would otherwise help to subjugate the Internet beneath a nightmarish, big brother control grid.
The ‘dark out’ which took place today in protest to SOPA and PIPA must be recognized as a major victory for free speech. In a day and age when the government can now kidnap you and torture you all the whilst restricting your right to trial, activists are going to need several more victories such as what has been witnessed today in order to help bring down a tyrannical state that has well over-reached its bounds.
